Stay Connected in Korea: Your Complete SIM Card Guide

As a local who’s helped countless international friends get connected, I’ve put together this practical guide based on real experiences and the most current information (January 2026)

1. Incheon Airport (Highly Recommended for First-Timers)

  • Why I recommend it: You’ll want internet access immediately to call a taxi, use maps, or contact your hotel
  • Location: Terminal 1 & 2, Arrivals floor – look for mobile carrier counters near exit gates
  • Operating hours: Typically 6 AM – 10 PM (extended hours during peak season)
  • English support: ✅ Always available
  • Average wait time: 5-15 minutes (based on what I’ve observed)

Tip from a local : If you arrive late at night (after 10 PM), some convenience stores (GS25, CU) in the airport also sell prepaid SIM cards, though with limited data options.

2. Korea’s Three Major Carriers:

  • SK Telecom – Best coverage, slightly pricier
  • KT – Good balance of price and coverage
  • LG U+ – Most budget-friendly option

3. Alternative Options (If You’re Already in the City):

  • Myeongdong: Multiple tourist-focused mobile shops along the main street
  • Gangnam Station: KT & SK stores near exits 10-12
  • Major shopping malls: COEX Mall, Lotte World Mall have official carrier branches

Compatible Devices (2026):

  • iPhone: XS/XR and newer (check: Settings → Mobile Data → Add Data Plan)
  • Samsung Galaxy: S20 and newer, Z Fold/Flip series

⚠️ Important Check Before You Buy:

  1. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked (not locked to your home country carrier)
  2. Not all international models support eSIM in Korea – check manufacturer specs
  3. Some Chinese phone models have eSIM hardware disabled
  • Passport: Required for identity verification and registration
  • Payment: Credit/debit card or cash

Reliable Platforms (Based on Tourist Feedback I’ve Collected):

For eSIM:

  1. Airalo – Most popular among tourists I’ve met
    • ✅ Pros: Instant delivery, 24/7 chat support, refund policy
    • ⚠️ Cons: Prices in USD (check exchange rate)
  2. Klook
    • ✅ Pros: Accepts multiple currencies, frequent promo codes
    • ⚠️ Cons: Customer service can be slow during peak times

4G/LTE still covers 99% of the country — including mountain trails and rural towns

Currency Exchange

Airport exchange rates aren’t the best, but having some cash immediately when you land is worth the convenience. Here’s how to do it smartly without losing too much money.

Terminal 1 (Most International Flights):

  • Arrivals Floor (1F): After passing through customs, you’ll see 4-5 exchange counters immediately
  • Location markers: Look for signs saying “Money Exchange” or “환전” (Korean)
  • Counter positions: Between Gates 4-10, impossible to miss

Terminal 2 (Selected Airlines):

  • Arrivals Floor (1F): Similar setup, counters near exits 1-4
  • Less crowded than T1 in my experience

At Incheon Airport, you’ll see counters from:

  1. KB Kookmin Bank (국민은행)
  2. Shinhan Bank (신한은행)
  3. Woori Bank (우리은행)
  4. Hana Bank (하나은행)

All four banks offer nearly identical rates at the airport – within ₩1-5 difference per dollar. Don’t waste time comparing; just go to the shortest line.

Standard Operating Hours (Most Counters):

  • Daily: 5:00 AM – 11:00 PM
  • Covers: 95% of international flight arrivals

24-Hour Service Locations:

  • Incheon T1: At least one counter stays open 24/7 (usually KB or Shinhan)
  • Incheon T2: 24-hour counter available
  • Location: Look for “24시간” (24-hour) sign
  1. Passport: Required for all currency exchanges.
  2. Accepted Currencies: USD, EUR, JPY, CNY, and most major foreign currencies.
  3. Methods: Cash only (for exchange purposes). Credit/debit cards are not accepted for currency exchange.

You can also withdraw KRW directly from local ATMs using an international debit/credit card. Make sure your card is activated for overseas withdrawal and check with your bank for associated fees.
